Since when are cookies sexist?

Spending my afternoon piddling through my work half-hearted and checking my twitter timeline with my full attention, I noticed people talking about the next Scarlet Caps event. I checked my email and read that they are hosting a cookie exchange at Kettler next weekend. My initial reaction was “I like to bake, I like to drink, and I love the Caps, what a great event.” I turn back to my timeline and chaos has ensued.

People, mostly women, on Twitter were complaining about this event. The major complaints I saw were the cost being at $10. Excuse me? Most of the Scarlet Caps events I have attended have cost over $100. And people want to complain about $10. They are also serving beverages, including mimosas. I’d encourage everyone to go to a local bar and order a mimosa, if you can get a mimosa and pay the tip in under $10, then I will stand corrected, but until then really, you want to complain about $10? Second complaint I saw was that this is sexist. Really? Last time I checked anyone can bake cookies. And it is going to be during hockey practice. Very sexist. They aren’t asking you to wear a pencil skirt, high heels and your pearls people. It’s the holidays and lots of people bake cookies, why not?

So to these complaints this is what I have to say:

If you don’t like the price then don’t spend your money on it. At least they are hosting a more reasonably priced event, on a weekend so that more people have access to it. Secondly to the people screaming that it is a sexist event, you are the people who give female hockey fans a bad name. I’m sure you all are the first people in line for hockey ‘n heels tickets, the first after practice to get your picture with your favorite hockey players and the first people gawking at them at other organizationally sponsored events. Girls wonder why the terms “puck bunny” and “jersey chaser” get placed on female hockey fans because having a cookie exchange is not a good enough event for them. I think its a tragedy that female “fans” would say such things. Honestly, I’m grateful for a hockey organization that cares about it’s female fans and provides them with events to get together and meet other female fans. I think all these people with these complaints are sending the wrong message. They clearly don’t want to be treated differently, so I guess that means no more female only events. I get really excited about those events and would hate to see them go. Is hockey ‘n heels sexist? No. So what’s the big deal?

I guess everyone should just call Ms. Cleaver, because I’ll be baking cookies and attending the event. For love of the game, peace be with you.

BLOOOOOD

I have not blogged in a while so I decided I should blog about my first blood donation experience.

I decided to sign up for the Washington Capitals blood drive, since my friend Lindsay does them all the time and I wanted to do something to give back to the community. So I signed up late and the only appointments were either really early or really late. I decided for the early so I could get it out of the way. I woke up early this morning, I ate some oatmeal and drank a glass of OJ. Took my vitamins and grabbed a bottle of water as I headed out the door. My friend Ryan drove me since my mom said she passed out when she gave blood, and this being my first time, I was not sure how I would react.

I got to the Dulles donation location and was welcomed with smiling faces and lots of Caps fans! The paper work that I had to fill out was quick and easy, very painless. Then I was taken to a mobile donation bus right away. I got my blood pressure measured, my temp taken and my finger pricked. I bled through the band-aid the lady gave me for my finger prick. She said wow you must be a good bleeder. Thanks? haha Then she reiterated to me that I was not allowed to work out today after donated blood. She laid me down in a chair and looked at my veins and said I had nice big veins. She rubbed the iodine on my arm and then put a big piece of gauze over my vein, she was about to grab the needle and she said my eyes got big and asked if I was ok, I said yes and then looked out the window, she stuck me, rather painlessly, and the blood donation was underway. Took me less then 5 minutes to fill up a pint. She bandaged me up, with red tape of course, and then I was free to have my cookies and juice. 10 minutes later I was free to go grab my goodies!

I was nervous at first, but everyone was really nice and then process was quick and easy. Everyone made me feel comfortable. My arm is a little tender now. There is a small bruise on my vein and I was really tired when I got home, but other than that everything was a-okay! I can’t wait to donate again this fall.

GO CAPS! =)

Reason for today’s post: so I don’t go crazy!

SOOO I wish I had something really cool to blog about but I don’t so you can read about what is going to happen in my life this weekend.

Thursday: Lindsay and I will be attending our good friend Dave Bentley’s happy hour at the Front Page to raise money for our Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure team. The Front page always promises a good time and with good friends and weather in the works, it should be a great night.

Friday:No big plans for this day. Just work but I will be booking my flight for our family vacation to Florida that night. I have to fly down seperately since I will have class and also so I don’t kill them all from being around them too long. Then it will be a nice evening at home, studying and watching a movie.

Saturday:I plan on waking up and running, by that time I will only have a week left to train to beat Dave Bentley in the 5k ;) I will be studying for most of the day. My friend Ryan and I have plans to go out in the Beemer convertible and have lunch or dinner. Then some more studying and who knows?

Sunday: I will be waking up and heading to Arlington, where I will get my run in for the morning. Lindsay and I will head to brunch and start pregaming for the Nationals game. Then we will head to the Nationals game! And probably some more drinking since it is Sunday Funday!

Monday:NO WORK and NO CLASS! So I plan on sleeping in, recovering from Sunday and studying. My friend Cayce is having a cookout so I may attend that in the afternoon. Where ever the wind takes me!

sooo that’s my weekend in a nutshell. I’m sure things will change. I can’t wait to sleep in and maybe do some chill laxin by the pool. Just gotta make it through today, which has already been testing my patience. But I am having beer lime chicken for dinner so I am just trying to make it to dinner! Hope everyone has a great hump day!
